There are 4 pools each with increasing temperatures ranging from 36 degrees C to 42 degrees C. It is a fantastic way to relax and unwind. The staff were very efficient and friendly. Upon check in you get issued a robe and a locker key. There are plenty of towels in the locker room for use. The spa treatments were wonderful. Between treatments you can relax in the lounge and even have time for a soak in the pools. What a great way to spend the afternoon.

First up a lady from Kent who in her own words “loved it” :

This was my first spa break so I have nothing to compare it to. However I thought the whole experience was so relaxing. I went with a friend and apart for getting changed for dinner we lolled around in the robes that were provided the whole time we were there. We had booked the TravelZoo overnight package which included a lovely lunch and dinner and one treatment. I had the Decleor facial – the best one I have ever had. The apartment we stayed in was beautiful – everything you could have needed was there. The Heat Experience with its Ice Room was great and the pool and gym are there if you feel energetic. My friend went for a walk along the canal, bringing back a bottle of wine from a local shop which we had in the evening. On the second day (you can stay till 3pm having booked in at 10 am the previous day) we found ourselves dozing in the relaxation room – it is so tiring doing nothing! We had our books to read and lots of news to catch up on and it was an ideal venue/experience to do both.

The opposite experience is expressed by Claire from Mirfield in her Spa review from Titanic Spa :

I have recently returned from an overnight stay at Titanic Spa and I would not recommend this to anyone who is wanting a Spa Break.

The “Spa” is more like an up to date Gym such as Fitness First etc, certainly not a retreat.

I have visited a few Health Farms and Spas and this is the worst.

It is far too small, has no room to just sit and relax, not enough sofas etc, there is a relaxation room but there isn’t much room in that.

The pool area is bare, not enough loungers around the pool or outside on the terrace. The dining area is small with a small open kitchen in the middle!! You can see them clearing plates etc! The kitchen area is only small so they must have the evening food brought in and warm it up! They prepare the lunch but that is nothing special and there isn’t a good choice, No salads, no fruit or yogurt for desserts, in fact no desserts! No water provided on the table and you have to pay for all your drinks such as tea, water & coffee at lunchtime which you don’t at Champneys & Ragdale Hall.

The apartment you stay in is OK but nothing special and if you don’t like heights it wouldn’t be suitable. Breakfast is left in room which consists of cereal & soft rolls! Very much fend for yourself!! The treatments are very expensive, certainly over priced. I had a facial included in the package which was fine but I wasn’t prepared to spend more on further treatments. I was bored and was glad to come home!!!

So how do guests rate this Maldivian resort? Here are some extracts from recent visitors.

A honeymoon couple from the UK seemed very pleased with their experience :

We spent 10 days in January 2009 at Anantara Veli Resort & Spa for our honeymoon and it exceeded our expectations. The Maldives is Paradise, the resort was excellent, the service was the best. We absolutely fell in love with this place. White sand and clear blue sea and you’ll see amazing fish so take a camera. We stayed in a Deluxe Overwater Bungalow and the view was breathtaking. The main difference between the Over water bungalow and the deluxe one is they are slightly larger with a dressing room, larger baths and a lower sunbathing terrace. We saw both rooms and although the OWB were still lovely we spent every day on the lower terrace and would have missed it. The resort is over 3 islands one of which is private and you can use the facilities on both islands. There is a boat (taxi) which runs all day and night so you can Island hop as much as you like. It really is Paradise and feels like you are the only people there. Veli is the smaller island and only has OWB. There is a gym, spa, tennis courts, numerous restaurants, pool table, internet room, gift shop, volleyball/badminton net. We took lots of books and magazines and did not get bored at all. There’s lots to do if you want to but we wanted to relax. We spent most of the day on our lower terrace or swimming or snorkeling and the afternoons walking around Dhigu or at the infinity pool.

Another happy visitor from Dubai :

We spent 4 days on the Veli Island in an overwater bungalow. There were 3 Islands, one was a private island,the other you took a short boat trip to or in the day you can canoe.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The standard of our bungalow was fantastic, we looked out over a coral reef and there was always fishes swimming around and the odd reef shark.

We used the over water spa and the treatments and ambiance were amazing, I would recommend the experience.

The weather was a mixture of sun and storms and it was always a perfect 30 degrees all of the time.

I would recommend the Lobster by Candle light dinner at the Dhoni pool bar. Also ate at the Fuddan grill which was equally good. On the last night we had room service which should be experienced as they set the table on the balcony. It  is a good alternative to paying for the private dining as there is no extra charge for this.

This resort is incredibly romantic and July is low season so it is very peaceful. We could go hours and hours without seeing anyone which adds to the experience – everywhere you go is on sand and for the last two days neither of us put shoes on once!

For a romantic holiday, honeymoon, chill out I would recommend Anantara to anyone.

This exotic, stylish and supremely cosseting hotel is by many discerned travelers regarded as one of the best 5-star resorts in Asia, easily up there with the Amans and One&Onlys in terms of frangipani garlands, cold flannels and staff-to-rooms ratio.

Stayed for 3 nights in April and had a wonderful time. The location is great overlooking the Mekong River and Elephant reserve – so beautiful and quiet but plenty of excursions available. Service is excellent throughout the hotel from the bar and restaurant staff to reception- nothing is too much trouble and everyone really friendly. Their rooms in Tai traditional style are gorgeous and we loved the infinity pool. We particularly liked the Italian restaurant – the food was good and not too pricey by hotel standards. We are really glad we chose to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary here…

A couple from Detroit, USA also found the resort well-worth their time but did find it quite expensive too :

My main gripe is that things appear almost too smooth and perfect. I almost expect a bit of roughness for such a remote location. Even the longtail boat is marked with a sleek Anantara logo (and c’mon…do you really have to make people wear the ridiculous neon orange life jackets?). We only stayed two nights…which was perfect. It was just enough time to ride the elephants, do some yoga, and take the boat to Chiang Saen and Laos.

The pricing for all activities is expensive (as is the food), but I guess that’s what happens when your options are pretty limited. Overall, we’re very happy to have gone to the region and stayed at the Anantara Golden Triangle.

Finally a couple from Palo Alto, California, USA had these comments about their short stay at the resort :

My husband and I spent three nights at the Anantara on our honeymoon over New Year’s Eve and we had an amazing experience! The elephants are wonderful – we watched them bathe in the river at dawn and did mahout training, and would highly recommend both experiences. The hotel also outdid itself with the New Year’s Eve extravaganza – they gave everyone at the resort Thai costumes to wear, had an elephant parade with Thai dancers, a blessing by village elders, a beautiful cocktail hour with hors d’oerves, a great show of Thai dancers during dinner, fireworks, and to cap it off, each guest got to light a floating lantern at the end of the night.

The spa was perfectly relaxing, the resort is magical (esp at night when all the candles are lit), and the suite was top-notch.

The manager and staff were also incredible – full stop.

Located on the illustrious South Beach, the Art Deco second home of the stars, the Mandarin Oriental is special. Before I entered my treatment room, the therapist stopped me and quietly said, “When you enter the room it is going to look very different to what you have seen before.” My immediate thought was, “hmmm, how?”. I was pleasantly surprised or, to put it precisely, I was taken aback. The spacious room was candle lit with dim blue surround lighting and had steps that led up to a bath area. Fuchsia Orchid petals adorned the floor and soft Tibetan music filled the atmosphere. I felt distant from the world outside the room – I had, in spa speak, “travelled beyond”.

This little place surprised me with having everything I wanted for a little relaxation. Very tasteful studio all mod cons and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Its very calming, quiet and I was not disappointed in anything to do with the studio itself. We had champagne in the spa on the outside deck looking into the forest and then dinner which was prepared and left in the fridge for us. Dinner was a bit of a let down but our standard for food is quite high and they did indeed try. Breakfast was also provided in the fridge which we cooked up in the morning and ate on deck, it was wonderful. The woman on reception seemed a bit rushed on check-out which kind of defeated the purpose of being in a relaxing environment but I would go back again. Overall great.

Perfect for a romantic getaway. These self-contained lodges are located in typical Australian bushland. Totally private, you feel as though you are the only guests.

The amazing thing about these places is the HUGE private spa in the balcony of your lodge. They are fantastic to relax in with a glass of bubbly.

Interior of the lodges are well fitted and modern. I highly recommend this accommodation for couples visiting WA.

Discreet signs around the spa will tell you about the natural products, the local history, and the nearby borehole from which they get all their water — but Titanic does it all without raising its voice or lecturing its clientele.

The building has been restored using the old foundations and brickwork, and with some modern savvy, it is now carbon neutral and more than compensates for the excessive comforts on its ground floor. There is even an energy calculator on the wall showing how much energy is being generated by the solar panels — and how much this offsets.

The article quotes Warrick Burton, the spa director:

“It’s eco, but without ramming it down people’s throat; without the wellies.”

The Good Spa Guide also reviews the Titanic Spa positively for their treatment facilities, but was not impressed with every aspect of the spa:
