The Spa at Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month.
Built by a group of investors called the Palm Springs Spa Inc., and led by developer Samuel Banowit, the 30,000-square-foot spa that opened on Jan. 21, 1960, cost $2 million to build and paved the way for the opening of The Spa Hotel three years later.
To celebrate longevity for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians’ sanctuary and place of healing for the mind, body and spirit, the Spa — with its 36 mineral tubs, 34 massage/treatment rooms and two outdoor mineral pools — is offering a number of packages — from the 1960 Glam Hair Do special for $50 to the “Golden Celebration.”
It includes a 50 minute massage or facial, a mini loofah body polish, Taking of the Waters and commemorative gift for $110.
If regalia is what you are after, then the Jan. 21 “Sparty at the Spa” with cocktails, buffet, mini spa treatments and gift can be had for $50. Prizes will be awarded for the Best 1960 hairdos and Best 1960 style. And stealing some slang from the ’60s, that promises to be groovy.
